Book Details:

Genre: Fiction/Crime
Published by: Witness / HarperCollins
Publication Date: 10/8/2013
ISBN: 9780062301963
Series: 1st in the Ben Cooper & Diane Fry Series

Synopsis:

The helicopters are halted. The search for fifteen-year-old Laura Vernon ends when her body is found, murdered, in the forest.

On his hunt for the killer, detective Ben Cooper begins to suspect the people of Derbyshire are guarding some dark secrets-secrets that Laura might have known. Further complicating his investigation, Cooper is paired with an unfamiliar partner: Diane Fry, a woman as tenacious as she is alluring. Together they learn that in order to understand the town’s present, they must unearth its past.

Black Dog is like Twin Peaks by way of Tana French, and the first novel in the multiple award-winning Cooper and Fry series.

Read an excerpt:

The spot where Ben Cooper stood was remote and isolated. A passing walker wouldn't have been able to see him up here among the bracken, even if he'd bothered to look up.

Cooper turned round, wafting his hand across his face against the flies. He was looking through the trees and thick brambles as if towards the end of a dark tunnel, where the figure of Harry Dickinson was framed in a network of branches. Cooper had to squint against a patch of dazzling light that soaked the hillside in strong colours. The old man stood in the glare of the low sun, with hot rocks shimmering around him like a furnace. The haze of heat made his outline blur and writhe, as if he were dancing a slow shimmy. His shadow, flung across the rocks, seemed to wriggle and jerk as its shape fragmented among the bracken and brambles.

The expression in Harry's eyes was unreadable, his face lying partly in the shade from the peak of his cap. Cooper couldn't even tell which way he was looking, whether he'd turned away or was staring directly towards him in the trees. He wanted to grab the old man by the shoulders and shake him. He wanted to tell him that somebody had disturbed this spot, and recently. The evidence was right there for anyone to see, and to smell.

There had been two people here, and at least one of them had been looking for more than just rabbits. The smell that lingered under the trees was of stale blood. And the flies had found something even more attractive than Cooper's sweat to feed on.

Book Promo: Tigereye by Mara Harrison

Tigereye
by Mara Harrison

Scarlett is being hunted — by the agency, the man in the blue car, the angry girl inside her own head. She doesn't know what they want from her…or why she keeps waking up in somebody else's life, masquerading as a spy. Code name: Tigereye

Scarlett Fitzgerald's normal teenage life is wrenched apart when she wrecks her car only weeks before graduation. Everyone assures her she's fine, but they're wrong. They have to be, because ever since the accident strange things have started to happen. It only takes a few days for Scarlett to realize she's being followed. The man in the blue car is getting closer and he won't leave her alone. But she'll take the creepy man in the car any day over the scary feeling that someone else is trying to control her body, or the memories of a surgery that everyone insists she never had. And then there are the dreams — vivid, scary, so real that she wakes up in the morning bruised and sore like she's been awake the entire time, fighting, falling, running for her life. Scarlett is plunged into a mystery that keeps growing every time she turns over a new rock. And when she finally gets to the truth, she realizes that nothing in her life is how she thought it was. Especially herself.

Hi! Mara Harrison here talking about my new book Tigereye. The whole thing stemmed from a conversation I had with my mom one day about a girl who lived one life when she was awake and another when she was dreaming. I wanted to put some fun unique twists in it and (hopefully) keep people guessing until the end.

The scene below is the first in the book. I wanted to let the reader experience Scarlett's confusion and fear while she's in the middle of it. There's no lead up, no explanation, we're dropped right into the scene. She has no idea what's going on and I don't want the readers to either.

Chapter One
Awake…Maybe

Consciousness came in short excruciating bursts. White lights, penetrating noises, voices filtering in through fuzzy layers of gray matter. And then there was darkness, quiet. Nothing hurt in the dark. Scarlett fought it, strived toward the pain once again. Pain was life. And the other…no. She wasn't ready for that yet.
Not yet.
But it hurts…
Not yet.
"Relax…" The voice was deep, soothing, treacherous.
No. I'm not ready to die. Scarlett struggled to move.
"Scarlett. You're safe. Sleep."
Her eyes were closed already. She didn't trust the voice, but she listened. It was so much easier to let quiet take over.
"Good girl,” he said. “You'll be fine soon."
She nodded weakly. At least in her mind she did. The darkness seeped in, soft and heavy but sleep remained elusive. Vaguely, Scarlett became aware of voices muttering, feet shuffling.
"She's down again. We can complete the procedure."
Procedure?

Panicked, Scarlett tried to tear herself out of the heavy, drugged sleep, but something sharp sliced into her head at the base of her skull. She would have screamed if she could. It hurt too badly for her to even be scared. For a long time, Scarlett knew nothing else but excruciating white hot pain. When she thought she wouldn't be able to handle anymore, when it seemed like she must be dying because nothing else could hurt so horribly bad, the pain ebbed, slowly drained away until finally she could breathe again.
"It's completely connected now. Move quickly. Retrieve the package and get it to safety. We don't know yet how long the chip will be active."
Chip? Panic flooded through her groggy body.
"And be careful," a second voice added. "Until we figure out who was behind the crash, we don't leave anything to chance."
Another shot of pain stabbed her in the arm, and then it was gone and the darkness pulled at her once again. Scarlett opened her eyes. She had to fight it.
She was in a room, the lights overhead were nearly blinding. A blond man leaned over her, hand on her arm, face partially obscured by the lights behind his head. Another man with dark hair hovered at the corner of her bed. Scarlett could barely see him with the lights shining bright in her eyes. Only a vague shape looming, impressions of colors. Scarlett tried to pull away from the blond man. She had to find out where she was. She had to escape.
"What are you doing to me?" she forced out. Her voice felt sore and scratchy, sounded even worse. She had to sit up, even if the room was spinning. Scarlett squeezed her eyes closed for another moment and gathered the strength to move.
I have to get up. They're going to kill me…
She couldn't let that happen.
The blond guy reached up and brushed her forehead, his touch oddly gentle. "York, she's still awake. We need another tranquilizer."
The dark haired one, York, loomed over her with a needle, long and menacing, clutched in his hand.
"N—" Scarlett tried to speak. But he stuck the second needle in her arm, and with a quick bite of pain, she was out.

Reviews:

Overall, this book was nice, I great distraction and entertainment, the scenes were well build and it was the first time I read about were-tigers and I was enjoying the difference from the usual werewolves story. ~ Proserpine Craved For

I have to say this book was engrossing. I could not put it down. There was some romance, some suspense, some shifting and some intrigue. I am pleasantly surprised at how much I really liked this story. ~ Kimberly at Books-n-Kisses

The world Marissa has created for her shifters is fascinating with likable characters that are easy to relate to. The book got better as it went along and I have a feeling the series is going to get better and better with each book. ~Delphina Reads Too Much

When I first read a review for Tiger Time, I knew this was a must read. Now I know that it is definitely a must read for anyone that like were romances. It’s definitely one of those that draws you immediately into the story, and never lets you go… a wonderfully written story of a woman’s journey into the unknown and a man who would show her to her destiny. LOVED IT!!!! Looking forward to the next one in the series. ~ Addicted to Romance

I was knocked back by this rather steamy story… ~ My Home Away from Home

Excerpt:
Tabitha screamed and jumped up quickly when she felt the solid body against hers. “Who the hell are you?”

“Don’t scream, Tabitha. You didn’t meet me tonight. I wanted to make sure you were all right. When I arrived, there was blood in the hall, your door was open, and I came in. There was more blood in your apartment. I called the hospitals, and they had no listings under your name, so I stayed here to see if you would return.”

While he spoke, she noticed his body. He must have been two hundred and twenty pounds, all of it muscle. He had arms the size of her waist. He reminded her of one of the biker guys who came into the restaurant. His chin-length black hair and broad shoulders gave him a menacing look. The only thing that hinted he might have a softer side was his spectacular, ocean blue eyes. His hair, brushing against the collar of his shirt, made her want to run her hands through it to see if it was as soft as it looked. But not right now.

“Back up. How do you know my name?”

“Didn’t you get the note I left on your door yesterday? My name is Ty Reynolds. I was a friend of your father’s.” He sat there on the couch watching her, careful not to move as if worried he’d scare her.

Shock must have shown on her face, because before she could say anything, he added, “I’m not here to hurt you. If I wanted to hurt you, I would have done so already. I made a promise to your father that when you were old enough, I would tell you everything, and I would do everything I could to protect you.”

My caseworker must have had the information wrong. If this man was a friend of dad’s, then he had to be a murder or into some deep shit. At this moment in time, however, she didn’t care. “I don’t care who you are. I want you out of my apartment!” She walked over to her door and opened it. “Please leave.”

“Listen, Tabitha, I know you’re scared, but you need to listen to me. Please just give me ten minutes.”

“You broke into my apartment and now you want me to listen to you? I don’t want anything to do with you.”

The World Below
Chronicles of the Goblin King - Book One
by Mike Phillips
Horror/Urban Fantasy
Date Published: 4/1/2013

In ancient times, magical creatures inhabited the earth. They lived on mountaintops, in trees, at  the bottom of lakes and rivers. But that was long ago, before the human race declared war on the creatures they feared and hated. Now the enchanted peoples are all but gone. Those few that remain fear being stretched out on an examination table in some secret, governmental facility.

The only place they can hide from the ever increasing number of satellites and smart phones is in the World Below.  Mitch Hardy is going through a hard time in his life. In his early twenties, he was working his way through college when he suffered an accident that left him flat broke and physically deformed. When Mitch decides to make a fresh start in a new town, things start looking up. He finds a place to live, a decent job, good friends. He even meets a nice girl. Unknown to Mitch, his new girlfriend is one of the Elder Race, what some call the Faerie Folk. Mitch doesn’t know that Elizabeth is looking for a father she never knew. The key to finding him is somehow tied up with the mysterious Blade of Caro. Desperate, she steals the Blade from its protector, the despotic ruler of the World Below, the Dragon of Worms, Baron Finkbeiner. When Elizabeth is kidnapped by the Baron, Mitch is pulled into a world or magic and monsters he never imagined.

Excerpt from The World Below.
Magic sigils were hidden all over the city, but along the Riverwalk powers of earth and water converged. Magic here was strange and unpredictable, but always strong. A star was carved on the nearest of the old cottonwoods. It was ancient magic, made perhaps by the native tribes who once inhabited this place.

Hume could not guess what its purpose was. For all he knew, it would take him away to some desperate corner of the underworld to be forever enslaved. He did nothing to protect himself. He had to let events run their course.

Finding Lady Elizabeth proved impossible. If this stranger had information, then he would surrender himself to free his sister.

A breath of chill air interrupted his thoughts. He shivered.

It was his humanity giving him warning. People who didn’t know any better would attach some old wives’ tale to the feeling, but he was not so blinded by the mundane. No one tread on his future grave. Evil approached.

In the world outside the reach of the cottonwood, the sun escaped below the horizon. Night had come.

Darkness coalesced; growing deeper in this haven below the trees, gathering until the river and the bay and everything beyond the sphere of darkness was lost. A black bird flew to a nearby piling. The crow was mangy and looked only moments from death by old age. It ruffled its ancient feathers and stared at Hume, penetrating his mind.

Unafraid, he stared back, filling his thoughts with a variety of deaths the crow might suffer at his hand. The bird cawed angrily, its harsh voice a show of defiance.

“Let’s get on with it,” he said. “Sunset was an hour ago.”

“Nightfall is now,” snapped the bird.

“Point taken. My mistake.”

The crow’s voice was as harsh as its call. “Patience Hume, your eagerness does you no credit. A lesser being than I might take it as a sign of weakness, but no advantage will I press. I know what it is to have a loved one in danger.”

“Oh? So, is that why you are here? How nice.”

“Yes, I wish to help you, and I have other reasons.”

“What are they?”

“Patience, Hume. Patience” The crow laughed. “We’ll get to that later.”

“Lovely.”

Another crow flew to the piling. Soon the place within the dark was full of crows. They raced to the piling, circling Hume like a cyclone. He stood still, and though the impossibility of safety seemed assured, he wasn’t touch.

The birds fused together, forming something in the shape of a man. The man was covered in black feathers. He had a crow’s head with a sharp beak and beady eyes. A mantle of greater feathers ringed his neck.

“That’s a little much,” Hume said. “Who are you trying to impress?”

“I must admit I’ve always had the knack for the dramatic. As a show of trust I appear to you as my true self.”

“Does that make you a murder or a man?”

“Ha, ha, quite clever,” said the crow man. “I shall have to remember that one. Yes, quite clever indeed.”
